What will the lamb eat during Eid al-Adha? Hey Lamb, can I sacrifice you this Eid? The sacrificial lamb prices are overly high!  These are merely a few sarcastic statements by some members of our society to vegans. For them, vegans are like lambs, or goats, just because they opted to stop eating meat, eggs and dairy products. Their only attribute on the family feast of Eid al-Adha, is the side salads, and if they are lucky, they will find hummus, the queen of the vegan dishes, and some vegan stuffed vine leaves.

When I adopted Veganism, I kept it a secret for a long time for the fear of verbal harassment and annoying endless questions.  After the matter was revealed, I was accused of forbidding what God has allowed us to eat, or in a slightly gentler way, some comment that I deprived myself from the pleasures of the world. Then, they praise God that they are not insane like me.

As a vegan, I preferred to abstain from meat, milk and eggs for health and ethical causes. But certainly, I never uttered a prohibition. In the tale of the prophet Jacob (PBUH), which is mentioned in the Quran; “All food was lawful to the Children of Israel, except what Israel made unlawful for himself before the Taurat (Torah) was revealed. Say "Bring here the Taurat (Torah) and recite it, if you are truthful”, (Verse 93 - Al-Omran). Israel is the other name of Prophet Jacob. He preferred to refrain from eating camel meat after getting ill. I'm not dying to try in this article to convince any of you to convert to Veganism, nonetheless. But, I just wanted to highlight the types of sparring, ridiculing on the pretext of laughter, as well as questioning the vegan’s religious beliefs.

Eid al-Adha, or as Kuwaitis call it, Eid El-Laham, (the Eid of meat), slaughtering sacrificial animals is a religious ritual in accordance with the Islamic law, which calls for the butcher to say, “Bismillah”, in the name of Allah, before he uses a very sharp knife to slaughter. Provided that the slaughtering isn't done in the sight of any other animal.  Then, the meat gets divided over the needy, neighbors, family members, taking only a humble amount of it for the sacrifice owner.  This is a festivity of the day that Allah sent down a lamb to the Prophet Ibrahim, before he sacrificed his son Ismail, subjected to the rule of Allah.

The question is, what will the vegan slaughter on Eid al-Adha? Perhaps, a block of Tofu! Happy Eid Adha to all of you.
